Buckle Up, everybody - it's time for the Speedwheels 3000 in a race against crime!
Evie Clutterbuck has a plan. If her dad won't listen to her but instead spends all his time preparing for his annual car race, she will just have to join the race. Secretly of course… by the time she starts wondering whether it really is such a great idea to hide away in the trunk of the car, it's too late. They're off on a father-daughter-race across Europe!
In this book club, we'll race along on their journey through Europe, racing challenges, the family's past and emotional moments of father-daughter-bonding. We will investigate together with Evie and try to figure out who is trying to frame her father in an unexpected crime that will change the whole race.
Along with discussing the chapters each student will have read on their own in between our class sessions, we are going to create individual reading journals. The journals are an invitation to be creative - do you prefer to write down your thoughts? Will you sew your own racing suit or draw a map of the Clutterbucks’ route through Europe and add in clues to solve the mystery? I cannot wait to see what you come up with!
Working with our hands is a crucial part of our human experience, and actually helps connect us to what we're experiencing and expressing with language. With books themselves already giving us the gift of getting immersed in stories and their emotions and putting those emotions into words, this book club combines the benefits of reading with those of crafting and creativity. This trains our language skills, our understanding of our own and others’ experiences and fosters expression on different levels. We will discuss the novel and present our creations to each other as a community. Suitable for anyone already able to read the book (or anyone who has someone to read it to them) and fluent enough in English to have a conversation - whether completely fluent or using this class to get more speaking practice.
TW: child/sibling death (not directly part of the plot, but is discussed several times as the main character's brother passed away before her birth), kidnapping, dangerous situations while driving
